The italian bee originated from northern Italy. A subspecies of the Western Honey Bee, this bee is able to survive in a wide variety of climates. They are excellent foragers and swarm less often then Western Honey Bees. Though there are many advantages there are some downsides! They are susceptible to disease and consume their store at a higher rate. Overall this tough species of bees is a great candidate for our bee hive!<\/p>\n

The queen bee is a female bee fed “Royal Jelly” as a larvae. Once it has grown up it is mated with once. If kept healthy, the queen bee can lay about 1,500 eggs a day!<\/p>\n

One of the plants we are getting is the Sullivant’s Milkweed. The Sullivant’s Milkweed is very similar to the appearance of normal milkweed. It’s origin is also from the prairie.\u00a0 There is also the Senna hebecarpa, which has bright yellow flowers. The Senna hebecarpa is a legume type plant. This plant is good for bees and some types of butterflies!<\/p>\n
