Newsletter – September 21st

September 20, 2023

Welcome to the 8th Grade Homeroom newsletter! We had a great time exploring the Ethanol plant and the Anderson County Historical Museum this week. Ask your child about the smell and BINGO!

In each newsletter this year, I am going to ask you to pray a specific prayer for your child. Our class prays everyday for others, including you parents, so I would like to invite you to pray for specific parts of your child’s school year.
The prayer for this week is: Ask God to help them not worry.
“Don’t worry.” Easier said than done. There is so much in our world to worry about. For our kids, they have school obligations, family obligations, club obligations, team obligations, and the dreaded peer pressure all to add to their worry list. The need to “fit in” is very strong on so many levels than what we had to deal with as teenagers. Our kids need God as a lifesaver in the sea of worry that floods their days. Only He can truly take the worry away and provide the love that our kids need. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7.

Our school theme is “Connected” with our verse of “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.“–John 15:1-5.
Chapel offerings will go to Lead a Child for 1st quarter. Please encourage your child to bring offering each week. It is a good way for them to remember the blessings they have and to share those blessings with others. “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” Proverbs 14:31.

Fall Conferences – We will have our fall Parent Conferences on Thursday, September 21 and Friday, September 22. Parents will meet with the middle school team together in 25 minute time slots. You will receive your child’s mid-term progress report, MAP test scores, and Thursday envelope at the conference. Please plan to come a few minutes early so you can complete a parent survey for the school before our conference.

Pie Fundraiser – Please have order forms and payments returned to the school today (Thursday, Sept. 21).

Mrs. Maresko’s funeral – Our school counselor, Mrs. Maresko, went to her heavenly home last week. She was a valued member of our school family and will be missed. The visitation will be at Hope Lutheran Church on Friday, September 22 starring at 9:30 am with the funeral beginning at 11 am.

Our second field trip will be on Tuesday, September 26 to Timber Ridge Outdoor Education. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to drive. Students need to wear their PE uniforms and close toed shoes. They need to bring a water bottle and disposable sack lunch. We need to leave at 8:30, so please have your student at school by 8:20 if possible. Your child is welcome to bring a hat to wear. Please have sunscreen and bug spray applied before they come to school.

Fentanyl PresentationAs you may have heard (or maybe not) Fentanyl is a problem in the United States, especially for our youth, but what you don’t know about this problem may surprise you.  Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church (13145 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS 66062) in Olathe is putting on a fentanyl awareness presentation on Sunday, October 1 at 1:30pm.  This presentation is put together by Captain John Diaz with the KCK police department and Libby Davis with Keepin Clean for COOP.  The presentation will go from 1:30-3:00pm and there will be separate sessions for youth (middle school and up) and parents.  Any questions please reach out to Pastor Ada pastorada@bslcks.org or Jennifer Bertels jennifermbertels@gmail.com.
