Newsletter – February 8th

February 7, 2024

This week I’ve been reflecting on a verse that keeps popping up in my life, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). I remind my students that their actions and words should be a light to others. We should be forgiving, encouraging, and truthful with each other. Those things are difficult for teenagers and adults alike because our sinful nature makes us selfish and looking for fairness in the world. But letting “your light shine before others” is not about you or me; it’s all about JesusHis light is shining through us. His love is reflected. He is the reason we can be forgiving, encouraging, and truthful. So this week, think about how you are shining Jesus’s light to others.

Chapel offerings will go to Comfort Dogs Ministry for 3rd quarter. Please encourage your child to bring offering each week. It is a good way for them to remember the blessings they have and to share those blessings with others. “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” Proverbs 14:31.

Basketball & Cheer PicturesThursday, February 8th after school. Bring your uniform. Photo order forms were sent home in your child’s Thursday envelope.

Red FridayStudents can wear Chiefs shirts with uniform bottoms to school on Friday, February 9th.

Valentine’s Day – Students may wear a Valentine’s Day shirt with uniform pants on Wednesday, February 14th. If we do not have school that day, students may wear their shirts on Thursday.
Just a reminder that 8th grade does not have a Valentine’s Day party. I will bring in a small treat for the class that day. We also ask that students don’t bring valentine cards to hand out, but encourage students to purchase Friendship Grams instead.

Spring Play – Mrs. McIntosh will be our drama coach for our 7th/8th grade Spring Play. Auditions will be held on Monday, February 12th at 3:45 pm – 4:30 pmRehearsals will be during school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-4:00 pm starting on Feb. 20. The spring play is called The Pony Expresso and will be performed on April 18-19. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Mcintosh at mcintosh@hopelutheran.org.

Step-up DayTuesday, February 13th is our annual Step-up Day for the younger grades, but Mrs. Jankowski is giving the 8th graders a late start that day.  8th graders need to arrive at school at 11:00 to do devotions before their math or language class begins at 11:15.  Students should still wear regular uniform clothes that day.  Please email me before 8:00 that morning if your child needs a hot lunch on Tuesday.  If you need to drop your student off before 11:00, we will be happy to have them help in the office that morning.
P.S. That day could be a good time to go for a high school visit!

Ash Wednesday Chapel – As part of this service on Wednesday, February 14th, the children may participate in the imposition of ashes.  If you do not want your child to participate, please let his/her teacher know.  The children do not have to participate if they do not wish to.  If you have any questions, please get in touch with the school office. Chapel service will be held in the sanctuary. Parents are welcome to attend.
**If the Chiefs win the SuperBowl, we will not have school on Wednesday so that families can attend the parade.  In that case, our weekly Chapel will move to Thursday morning, but ashes will not be offered.

Quiz Bowl – Starting next week, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:45 – 4:30, we will hold Quiz Bowl practice. The coaches are Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Schkade. For more information, please contact Mr. McCarthy at mccarthy@hopelutheran.org

DON’T FORGET TO BE PUTTING YOUR COINS IN YOUR MITE BOXES. We are encouraging all children at Hope Lutheran School to fill their MITE BOX and bring it back on Wednesday, February 28th for chapel.  The best way to fill the mite box is to put your loose change in from the car or have the children put in a penny a day.  As an incentive for the 8th graders to collect coins, I will award 5 minutes of extra recess time for every $5 collected.  Thank you for supporting the LWML.
