Newsletter – February 15th

February 14, 2024

This week we celebrate Ash Wednesday. This day marks the beginning of the season of Lent which leads up to Easter. The ashes are created from the burned palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. Placing ashes on our foreheads reminds us that we are sinful, unclean, and will someday return to dust. We are also reminded of the need for repentance for our sins. While this seems like a depressing event, it is actually leading up to the most joyful day of the year – Easter!

Chapel offerings will go to Comfort Dogs Ministry for 3rd quarter. Please encourage your child to bring offering each week. It is a good way for them to remember the blessings they have and to share those blessings with others. “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” Proverbs 14:31.

Chapel – Chapel will be moved to today, Thursday, February 15th at 8:40 am.  No imposition of ashes will be offered.

Valentine’s Shirts – Students are invited to wear Valentine’s shirts with uniform bottoms today, Thursday, February 15th.

Pizza Lunch – Our class is being treated to pizza on Friday, February 16th, so no need to pack a lunch!

Quiz Bowl – Starting this week, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:45 – 4:30, we will hold Quiz Bowl practice. The coaches are Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Schkade. For more information, please contact Mr. McCarthy at mccarthy@hopelutheran.org

Geography Bee – Our annual Geography Bee will be on Wednesday, February 28th at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary.  Congratulations to our contestants, Ashlyn and Brogan, and to our alternate, Lydia. Parents are invited to come watch.

DON’T FORGET TO BE PUTTING YOUR COINS IN YOUR MITE BOXES. We are encouraging all children at Hope Lutheran School to fill their MITE BOX and bring it back on Wednesday, February 28th for chapel.  The best way to fill the mite box is to put your loose change in from the car or have the children put in a penny a day.  As an incentive for the 8th graders to collect coins, I will award 5 minutes of extra recess time for every $5 collected.  Thank you for supporting the LWML.

Paula Miller Spades Tournament – Next Saturday, February 24th – 5:00 pm
Entry Donation – $30 per two-person team entry;  $20 per individual entry
Fun night of cards, food and fellowship. Babysitting by eighth-grade students – free offering appreciated (it is a fundraiser!). No experience is required – and we will email you the rules in advance!  If you do not have a partner, we will team you up with one.
