Dear Parents,

The weeks seem to be flying by. We are nearing the end of our first quarter of the school year. If your child has any missing assignments, I will be handing out a missing assignment form to them. You can always check as well on our Ren-Web program. Missing assignments need to be handed in by Monday, October 18. Our quarter ends on Friday, October 22.

We finished our MAP testing this week. The kids did a great job at doing their best. You will be given the results at a later date.

Friday is the Ernie Miller Park field trip. Students are to wear comfortable shoes and long pants/blue jeans. The temperature for Friday is 50-59 degrees. Have your child wear what they will be warm enough and comfortable enough in. Also, don’t forget a BAG lunch is needed. If a lunch is packed in a lunch box, your child will be responsible for carrying it everywhere we hike. Again, thank you to my faithful drivers for helping us get to and from our trip. (Mrs. Schmitz, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Rasmussen, Mrs. Poindexter)

Dear Parents,

This coming Monday is our last day at STARBASE. Please be reminded that your child needs to have a packed lunch that day. It has been quite a rewarding experience attending this program and I am grateful that our kids were able to experience this STEM program to the fullest.

This week we have continued our reading of Island of the Blue Dolphins. It’s an excellent book for our grade level and the kids are enjoying the adventure. An in class project on the book will be in the making soon.

In math we are focusing on reading and writing decimals to thousandths, using numerals, number names, and expanded form. We are also using place-value understanding to round decimals to any place. The kids are doing a good job of listening and applying what they are learning.

As our weather continues to go up and down, there has been a few cool morning recess breaks. I ask that you be mindful of these days and send your child with a sweater. Thank you.

Just a reminder that Wednesday is an early dismissal day for students. Teachers have an in service half day. Our dismissal time for fifth grade is 11:45.

Have a blessed weekend.

In Christ,

Mrs. Kathy McIntosh

Dear Parents,

It was great seeing you all at our Fifth Grade Open House night. We had 100% attendance in fifth grade. The support for your children and their education is evident. Thank you for being this important link that ties us together for the love, support, and well-being of the kids.

On Friday, September 10, we will have our Fall Carnival. This is a great time for students, family, and faculty to get together and have some great fun and great interaction. We will also be having our annual Pie Auction that evening. I would invite you to consider donating a pie to the auction. This helps support our school programs. It’s also fun to out bid an opponent for the pie you may have set your sites on. Hint: My personal favorites to bid on are key lime, coconut cream, French silk, and apple pie. Please come and join us. Invite a friend.

Our next Starbase field trip is on Monday, September 13. I am trying to post as many pictures as I can on our Fifth Grade (private) Facebook page. If you are able, please go to see the different activities and things we are learning. Thank you again to our drivers for making it possible to get to and from Starbase.

Our first parent-teacher conference is fast approaching. I will be sending out a Sign-Up Genius for you on September 7. Please sign up once you receive this so I can confirm the scheduled times. Thank you.

Lastly, I would just like to mention that it has been a joy having your kids in class. Each and every one of them are truly a blessing. I thank God for them daily in my prayers.

Please pray for our Hope families as many are traveling over this Labor Day weekend.

Dear Parents,

It’s hard to believe we have put in one week of school! The kids are adjusting quite well to our busy schedule. I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead.

Starbase continues again on Monday. The kids learned so much in one day. We are looking forward to our continued hands-on learning this week as well.

Your child’s yellow folder was sent home today. It is filled with school notes and graded homework from this past week. Please look over the papers and have the folder sent back on Monday. Don’t forget to mark your child’s church and Sunday school attendance on the front of the folder.

Back to School Night is Thursday, August 26! I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible. I have many things to go over. Working together will help us provide a positive partnering and enrich your child’s educational experience as we are guided and instructed by God to do so.

God bless your weekend with the joy of knowing you are loved by Him!

In His Service,

Mrs. Kathy McIntosh

For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth. Colossians 1:16a

Dear Parents,

Welcome to fifth grade! It is always exciting and a privilege for me to start a new school year. Children are wonderful gifts from God and I am very blessed to have the opportunity to challenge their minds and abilities each day along with sharing the love of Jesus with them.

We welcome Rylinn and Tyson to our class and to our Hope family.

I am looking forward to the school year and the days ahead. My prayer is that we grow both academically and spiritually together as we follow our Lord in His ways.

Each Thursday students will come home with a large yellow folder. Typically, graded work from the school week will be in the folder. If any daily assignment (not quizzes or tests) comes home and is below a 75% students have the opportunity to make corrections and turn that paper back in for a better score.

Corrections will only be accepted on the following Monday. Anything later will not be accepted unless your child is not in attendance on that day or if the first day of our school week is not a Monday.

  1. Corrections need to be written on a separate sheet of paper with the subject, page number of the assignment, and the student’s name at the top of the page titled, “Corrections.”
  2. Students are to do only the part of the assignment that was incorrect.
  3. The correction paper should be stapled to the front of the original assignment.

My weekly note, our weekly spelling list, and memory work will be on our website. This has proven to be very helpful especially if students forget to bring their spelling list home for an assignment or forget to take their Catechism home for memory. It allows them availability at all times.

STARBASE is our first field trip starting on August 23. (August 30, September 13, 20, 27) Below is a description. I am in need of two drivers who can drive from Hope at 9:15 and pickup at 2:30. The location is the Lenexa Armory. Please email me if you are available to help with transportation.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

DoD STARBASE is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Office of the
Assistant Secretary of Defense. At STARBASE students participate in challenging “hands-on, minds-on” activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). They interact with military personnel to explore careers and observe STEM applications.

DoD STARBASE’s primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEM opportunities as they continue their education. The program engages students through the inquiry-based curriculum with its “hands-on, minds-on”; experiential activities. Each academy chooses a customized curriculum from a large offering of peer-reviewed learning opportunities in each STEM area, such as: Newton’s Laws and Bernoulli’s principle, robotics, and engineering as they use the computer to design space stations, all-terrain vehicles, and submersibles. Math is embedded throughout the curriculum and students use metric measurement, estimation, calculation geometry, and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate concepts.

Lastly, welcome to our Fifth Grade Hope family! I hope to see you all at the Ice Cream Social followed by Family Movie Night on Friday, August 20.
