Newsletter Week of 3/31-4/4

March 26, 2025

Mite Box Collection Extended! We encourage all students at Hope Lutheran School to fill their Mite Box and bring it to chapel on April 2nd.

Serve-a-thon Our 5th graders will be driving to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Olathe to help with beautification indoors and outdoors. You will see a permission slip in Thursday folders this week. Please return it promptly.

BizTown: This will be such a great experience for our 5th grade class to learn about Kansas City’s economy and their place as a citizen. We are preparing by learning about various things in our classroom, such as writing checks, earning and saving money, and more! Our field trip will be April 10th, 10:00am-1:00pm. Pizza will be provided for lunch, and we are encouraged to bring our water bottles. Permission slips are due April 10, but the earlier the better.

Math: To start off our new quarter, we will be learning how to divide fractions. Please, feel free to have your child work on their math facts at home on 99math.com! They especially need to be focusing on their multiplication and division skills for the remainder of the year, as those are necessary in their future math lessons. We started using a new website (IXL) to enhance our lessons and practice!

Reading: Students will be choosing a book to use for their next book report project. The project will be a cereal box representing the book each student chooses. Save a box and send it to school ASAP to be ready for this project!

Writing: This week we are starting on a writing project to use their imagination to write a fictional fantasy story about finding a time capsule.

Social Studies: We continue to explore the southeast region, which includes Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. We have the opportunity to learn about each state’s history, economy, environment, culture, important places, and important people. Shortly after spring break each student will be researching two states and creating a presentation to give as a 4th and 5th grade combined audience. This presentation will be worked on in google classroom at school during our social studies time. Midwest Test on Wednesday, April 2. If students score 94% or higher, they do not take the Post Test. Click HERE for our Midwest song to practice!

Below is the exact resource I will be using. The maps will be labeled with a number, and the students will write the State and Capital that matches the location on the map. It would be a great resource to print for studying and preparing for the test for each region. When we move on to the next region, we will start with a pretest, and if a student gets 94% or higher on the pretest, then they will not be required to take the final test at the end of the region’s unit. When a student takes the post test for the region, the higher of the two scores will remain in the gradebook.

Norway: We are continuing to learn our traditional Norwegian dance! We are having such a fun time learning all of the steps! We look forward to continuing our hard work in learning the dance, as we will be performing it at the international fair on May 1st.

Technology: Mrs. Stava will be working with the fifth graders to create some stop motion projects starting with Google slides. Our goal with these skills is to create a stop motion video of a bible story using Google slides.
