Newsletter Week of 2/24-2/28

February 20, 2025

A major thank you to Mrs. Jacob for planning our Valentine’s Day Party on Friday! It was a blast to see them build their own catapults, and put them to use to see whose candy hearts would go the farthest and the highest. Thank you, Mrs. Jacob!

Math: We have been expanding our skills with multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. We will be testing our skills on these concepts THIS WEEK! Please, feel free to have your child work on their math facts at home on 99math.com! They especially need to be focusing on their multiplication and division skills for the remainder of the year, as those are necessary in their future math lessons.

Reading: We finished reading The Indian in the Cupboard, and we are watching the movie to follow. This week we will be starting a book report project on the book. A 12-sided 3-dimensional form is called a dodecahedron, which we will be creating based on the book. Each side will include various parts to reflect on, include in the characters, plot, theme, and much more!

Writing: We have been working diligently on our research paper using the skills we have practiced during our informational writing unit. We finished typing our Norway research papers and will be presenting them in class this week! I’m so proud of the the work that everybody put into their research and writing on this project!

Social Studies: We continue to explore the southeast region, which includes Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. We have the opportunity to learn about each state’s history, economy, environment, culture, important places, and important people. Our test for the states and capitals is THIS FRIDAY, February 21.

Below is the exact resource I will be using. The maps will be labeled with a number, and the students will write the State and Capital that matches the location on the map. It would be a great resource to print for studying and preparing for the test for each region. When we move on to the next region, we will start with a pretest, and if a student gets 94% or higher on the pretest, then they will not be required to take the final test at the end of the region’s unit. When a student takes the post test for the region, the higher of the two scores will remain in the gradebook.

Norway: Last week we started working on learning our traditional Norwegian dance! We are having such a fun time learning all of the steps! We look forward to continuing our hard work in learning the dance, and we will be performing it at the international fair in April!

Technology: Mrs. Stava has introduced the use of infographics to our 5th graders! We started creating an infographic in canva that aligns with our Norway research papers. It’s going to be a great addition to our work displayed at the international fair!
