Wednesday, March 12th – 3-4pm
Thursday, March 13th– 12-3pm
Friday, March 14th– 10 am – 1 pm – Grandparents Day

MOVING OUT: Following Grandparents Day, we will be moving things out of the classrooms to get ready for new carpet! Please come help to move the things in the fifth grade classroom to one side, as the carpet will be started one day, the stuff will get moved to the other side, and then it will be finished the following day. We start moving things at 12pm!

BizTown: I was able to go to an orientation meeting to prepare for our next field trip. It will be such a great experience for our 5th grade class to learn about Kansas City’s economy and their place as a citizen. Our field trip will be April 10th, 9:30am-1:30pm. Please consider driving our students to the destination, and if you are able to stay and volunteer. They will need volunteers to help it to run properly, and if I have a good count of parents staying to volunteer they will know how many more to get for our visit. I will be sending out an email with a signup genius for drivers and volunteers.

Math: We have been expanding our skills with multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. We will be testing our skills on these concepts THIS WEEK! Please, feel free to have your child work on their math facts at home on 99math.com! They especially need to be focusing on their multiplication and division skills for the remainder of the year, as those are necessary in their future math lessons.

Reading: This week we will be continuing our book report project on The Indian in the Cupboard. A 12-sided 3-dimensional form is called a dodecahedron, which we will be creating based on the book. Each side will include various parts to reflect on, include in the characters, plot, theme, and much more! My expectation is that every questions is answered fully and academically, and for their cutting, coloring, and gluing are nice and neat (almost no white paper showing).

Writing: This week we are working on our submission papers for Celebrate the Arts. Students are writing a fictional fantasy story. This is a great creative writing piece for them. I am excited to see how their imaginations are displayed in this writing project.

Social Studies: We continue to explore the southeast region, which includes Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. We have the opportunity to learn about each state’s history, economy, environment, culture, important places, and important people. Shortly after spring break each student will be researching two states and creating a presentation to give as a 4th and 5th grade combined audience. This presentation will be worked on in google classroom at school during our social studies time.

Below is the exact resource I will be using. The maps will be labeled with a number, and the students will write the State and Capital that matches the location on the map. It would be a great resource to print for studying and preparing for the test for each region. When we move on to the next region, we will start with a pretest, and if a student gets 94% or higher on the pretest, then they will not be required to take the final test at the end of the region’s unit. When a student takes the post test for the region, the higher of the two scores will remain in the gradebook.

Norway: We are continuing to learn our traditional Norwegian dance! We are having such a fun time learning all of the steps! We look forward to continuing our hard work in learning the dance, as we will be performing it at the international fair on May 1st.

Technology: Mrs. Stava has introduced the use of infographics to our 5th graders! We started creating an infographic in canva that aligns with our Norway research papers. It’s going to be a great addition to our work displayed at the international fair!
