General Information
Week 11 of band class is complete! We are now in November and time is flying. This week we continued to work on Christmas music in both groups and preparing for Veterans Day in A Band. A Band had an excellent performance at Glow Wild on Saturday so congratulations to them! Please encourage your students to practice at home! We have lots of performances coming up in the second half of the semester so the more time they can spend practicing at home will help us progress faster in class.
Announcement: There is no longer going to be a performance at Crown Center this year. We will just be focusing on playing for the basketball tournament and church that weekend.
Advanced Band
This week we continued to work on preparing for our Veteran’s Day performance. The two pieces we will be playing are American Declaration and the Armed Forces Salute. Both pieces are sounding fantastic so I am super excited for our upcoming performance. We have our all school rehearsal today in school to help practice transitions and learning the performance order.
We are also continuing our work on Christmas music. Both pieces are not the most difficult pieces I have ever given them, but it is providing a great opportunity to dig deep into the details and work on stylistic playing. One piece also calls for kazoos, which are arriving soon, so I am having the students work on humming that part in their music. By learning how to hum and sing this part, they will be able to play it successfully on kazoos when they arrive.
With the upcoming basketball tournament, I also will be handing out the Star Spangled Banner soon so we can start working on that.
4/5 Grade Band
This week we continued to work further in our red books. We started on No. 9 as a warm up. I then have been hopping around a few exercises in the book to continue their practice. No. 12, 15, and 17 are all ones we are working on in class.
5th grade reviewed their two new notes from last week and started to play our Christmas piece in class on Monday. We also learned what solo and tutti meant (one vs all).
4th grade continued their work on half notes and practicing reading music. We are working on becoming more comfortable with quarter notes. I also introduced two new notes to them (Bb and C/ D and C).
Our goal is to be able to play Good King Wenceslas for our Christmas performances so I will be moving a bit faster in class in order to make sure we can get there in time. Please continue to encourage your students to practice at home as this gives them the best chance to excel in class.
