Season of Epiphany

The Epiphany Season is variable in length. It begins on January 6, The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord, and concludes on with The Transfiguration of Our Lord, which is observed on the Sunday before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday (in the Three-Year Lectionary used at Hope).

The word Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “appearance.” The Day of Epiphany is sometimes called “the Christmas of the Gentiles.” The Gospel reading for Epiphany is St. Matthew’s account of the Gentile Magi following the star—and the Scriptures of the Prophets!—to Bethlehem, to worship the Christ Child. It sets the stage for what Matthew wanted to emphasize about Jesus: that He is not only the Messiah of His people, the Jews, but is the Savior of the whole world.

Another term often associated with both the day and season of Epiphany is Theophany, meaning “vision / revelation / manifestation of God,” referring first to Jesus’ being revealed to Gentiles as their Redeemer. Jesus also reveals His divine power in miracles, such as turning water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana (John 2:1–11) and stilling a storm (Matthew 8:23–27). The season includes two theophanies of the Trinity, the Baptism of Jesus (Mark 1:9–11) and His Transfiguration (Luke 9:28–36). On both occasions each Person of the Godhead is revealed: the Father in the Voice from heaven; the Son in the Man Jesus; the Holy Spirit in the descending Dove and the overshadowing bright Cloud.
