Homework

Academic work in 5th and 6th grade is challenging and demanding. All homework, papers, and projects are to be turned in on the due date. If homework is forgotten/not completed it will be treated as a missing assignment. As part of your student’s academic expectations, students are asked to fill out their planner daily. If your student needs more support, parents may be asked to sign the planner.

Each gradebook on RenWeb will have categories: assignments (50%) and assessments (50%).

Grading Scale (also delineated in general in the Hope Parent and Student Handbook):

A 95-100%
A- 94% E = Excellent
B+ 92-93% S = Satisfactory
B 87-91% U = Unsatisfactory
B- 85-86% N = Needs Improvement
C+ 82-84% P=Passing
C 78-81% * = Modified
C- 75-77%
D+ 74%
D 71-73%
D- 70%
F Failing
Extra Credit

Extra credit will be offered at the teacher’s discretion. Extra credit is always optional but highly encouraged.

Redo / Corrections

Assignments and/or tests with a score of 74% or lower may be returned to students to be corrected.  Each correct answer will receive a half point. Any assignments that need to be corrected will be sent home in the weekly Thursday folder.  Corrected assignments are due back the following Monday.  All corrections should be copied on a separate sheet of paper and attached to the original assignment.  Corrections will not be accepted later than Monday.

School Policies

Make Up Work

Students absent one week or less are allowed two days for every day absent to complete missed work (for example, if absent for 3 days, all work should be completed in the 6 school days following the return of the student). For absences longer than one week, the time allowed will be one week plus the number of days absent. Students are expected to fulfill long-term assignments as originally scheduled. Planned absence work will be expected to be turned in when returning to school. If planned absence work not completed it will result in a 10% penalty.

(See Section 2.8 in Parent Student Handbook)

Outdoor Recess Policy

On most days, students will be expected to go outside for recess. If the following conditions exist, the students will not be taken out except to get a few minutes of fresh air.

  • The temperature is 15 degrees F. (-13 C) or below. The wind chill index is 0 (-18 C) or below. There is significant falling moisture.
  • Teachers may take their classes out briefly for fresh air at their discretion.
  • Students must have a jacket/coat to go out to recess if the temperature is 50 degrees or below.

Extracurricular Eligibility Standards

Hope Lutheran School’s eligibility policy requires all grades to be at least 75%.  This will be updated on a weekly basis, and notification will be by Tuesday for those who are ineligible for all competitions for that eligibility cycle (Wednesday-Tuesday).  Students will be allowed to practice unless a mandatory study hall has been given during practice time.

What does it mean to be ineligible to play in the next game/match or meet?  The student should still attend the contest and sit with his or her team on the bench but may NOT wear their uniform.  The coach or club sponsor may require the student to dress up (boys may be required to wear ties if their coaches or sponsor also are dressed for the game and girls may be required to wear church type clothes as well).  At this point, the student is still very much a part of the team and can still learn more about the game by observing from the bench.  It is also important for them to realize the impact they have on their team because they are not playing or participating.

Extracurricular activities include all athletic and non-athletic school sponsored clubs, such as knitting and rocket club.  Band is excluded from eligibility requirements.

(See Extracurricular Eligibility Standards in Middle School Policy Guide)

Missing Assignment Policy

A “missing” assignment is any assignment (homework, in-class work, or project) that has not been turned in when asked for by the teacher on the due date.  Missing assignments do not include missing work from a student who had an excused absence, as they receive 2 extra days per day they were absent in order to complete work they missed.

All missing assignments will receive a 10% deduction for each day it is missing, with a maximum late work deduction of 50%. Keep in mind that RenWeb treats assignments entered as missing as a zero, so they drastically hurt the student’s overall grade.

Parents will be contacted by RenWeb when their child receives an “M”. Students will also receive a print out of any missing assignments listed from RenWeb on Thursdays, to go home in their envelopes.

If a student accrues multiple missing assignments from all their classes collectively, he/she will be removed from specials and/or may be asked to stay for mandatory study hall until the work is completed and turned in. The importance of students completing their assignments at Hope is a priority over other extracurricular activities, both athletic as well as non-athletic. We value teaching our students to care about their academics and encourage them to strive to reach their full potential so that they will soar when they leave for high school and beyond!
