Newsletter – August 17th

August 14, 2023

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year! My name is Miss Hannah Christian and I am teaching first grade and at Hope this year. I will also be teaching 1st and 2nd grade choir this year. I am excited to have your children in my class this year!

Our theme for the 2023-2024 school year is “Connected” from John 15:1-5. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Your students will be expected to gain more independence throughout first grade. Students are responsible for reading aloud from their reading book at night for homework. This helps promote fluency and increase their comfort level with reading.

First grade drop off and pick up for the first week of school will be outside. I will meet your students outside and we will walk in together as a class.

This newsletter will be updated weekly with schedules and announcements. You will also be able to view memory and spelling assignments in the newsletter.

August 18 – Ice Cream Social 6:00-7:00

August 20 – Installation, Blessing of the Backpacks, and Blessing of Teachers 10:30 service

August 24 – Back to School Night – Kindergarten and 1st grade 6:30 pm

August 26 – 5th and 6th Preseason Volleyball Tournament at Hope

Please note: The first school lunch will be August 18th. The first school breakfast will be August 21st.

Lunch cost is $4.25 and breakfast cost is $3.00. Student may purchase a drink for $0.75 with lunch if they bring lunch from home. Snack drink will also cost $0.75.

Back to school night will begin in Concord Hall. We will then move to the first grade classroom. I will have a presentation with information and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

First grade is a peanut and tree nut free classroom this year. Please do not send these allergens with your child for lunch or snack.

We will have afternoon snack once a day after recess. Please put the snack somewhere distinct and make sure your child knows where it is. If it is kept in the lunchbox it is best to have a designated place for the snack. That way it is not accidentally eaten during lunch.

Please send your child with a water bottle every day. We do not have a sink in the classroom and having a water bottle helps keep your child hydrated.

All first grade students will need to bring a pair of tennis shoes for P.E. These shoes are separate from the shoes they wear to school. We ask you to bring P.E. shoes because rocks and gravel from recess can get caught in the tread of their regular shoes. Having a separate pair of shoes to wear to the gym helps keep the floor in our Family Life Center from getting scratched and scuffed.

All first grade students need headphones with a cord to plug into the Chromebook. Earbuds and Bluetooth headphones are not recommended.

First grade students use the bathroom with the lockers at the end of the hallway. We do not have a bathroom in the classroom. This helps to increase their independence and personal responsibility,

Please check your child’s yellow Thursday folder for weekly updates. This must be returned to the school each Monday.

Students will receive binders to take home sometime next week. This will include their daily behavior report and a place for you to sign off on their nightly reading.

I will send home a spelling list and memory verse each week. We will have memory tests on Wednesdays and spelling tests on Thursdays. Your child should recite the weekly memory verse at home. Memory grade includes the verse, book, chapter number, and verse number. We will practice the spelling words at school.
