Dear Parents,

Week at a Glance

Our handwriting lesson this week is writing the letters “O” and “o”. In language we are writing our own sentences using prompts. In religion we are studying the Lord’s Prayer and learning what the Apostle’s Creed is. For memory this week we learned the first article of the Apostle’s Creed. This week in math we began a new unit focused on place value and numbers through one hundred. Our music lessons this week are about the expressive qualities of music. In reading we are reading informative text on the life cycle of sunflowers. In science we are finishing our study of corn and are learning about the scientific method to prepare for our science fair projects. We are writing words with consonant digraphs and the long “o” sound in spelling. In social studies we are learning how location affects weather.

Weather

Please make sure your child has a jacket suitable for the coldest part of the day. If your child does not have a warm enough jacket they will not be able to go out for recess if the weather is cold.

Valentine’s Day Boxes

Your child may decorate a box from home to bring to school for Valentine’s Day. This box will hold any cards or treats from the day. If your child chooses to decorate a box please make sure it is school-appropriate. Shoe boxes would be an appropriate size for this project. This is not required but is a fun way for students to celebrate.

Open House

Open House nights will be held February 7th and 13th from 6-8 pm. On February 13th please come to school during Open House to meet next year’s teacher! Your student will have an opportunity to see their classroom and teacher for the upcoming school year. See the attached poster below for more information.

Ash Wednesday Chapel

As part of this service on Wednesday, February 14th, the children may participate in the imposition of ashes.  If you do not want your child to participate, please let his/her teacher know.  The children do not have to participate if they do not wish to.  If you have any questions, please get in touch with the school office. Chapel service will be held in the sanctuary. Parents are welcome to attend.

Science Fair

Mark your calendars! The Science Fair is May 1st. Your child will need to develop a project and complete a scientific experiment. Information on science fair requirements will be coming home in Thursday folders this week. Please read these papers carefully for information on due dates and your student’s responsibilities. Topics for these experiments are due February 7th. Please note that these experiments are conducted at home. Students will follow the steps of the scientific method and conduct an experiment to answer a science question. The website www.sciencebuddies.org is a great resource to get ideas for experiment topics. The science fair project is an experiment. Models and demonstrations are not experiments and these topics will not be accepted. When the project is complete, students will display their writing, pictures, photos, and process for others to see.

The Apostles’ Creed – The Second Article

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
