First Grade News 12/19

Dear Parents,

Merry Christmas! I pray you have a wonderful Christmas break with your families! It has been a joy to teach your students this semester. The information in this newsletter will address the rest of this semester as well as the first week of school in January.

Week at a Glance – 12/16-12/20
This week in reading we learned about the “sh” and “th” sounds. In social studies we finished our unit on jobs and economics. In science we learned about how plants and animals are similar to and different from their parents. In language we are learning about root words and suffixes. During math we are adding to 20. Our religion lessons are about the nativity story. In handwriting we are reviewing letters “g”, “j”, and “q”.

Week at a Glance – 1/6-1/10

In math we will begin a new unit on subtraction facts to 20. In reading we will be learning about subject-verb agreement. We will be learning about the early life of Jesus during religion. In social studies we will begin a new unit on land, landforms, and map skills. In science we will be learning about how groups of living things can be different. We will practice writing a letter in handwriting. We will have both spelling and memory tests the week of January 6-10.

December 20 – Sing-Along, Christmas Parties, 12 pm Dismissal No Extended Care
December 23 – January 3 – Christmas Break NO SCHOOL

January 6 – School Resumes

January 11 – OPEN HOUSE 9-Noon

January 16 – Parent/ Teacher Conferences – Early Dismissal 12 pm

January 17 – Parent/Teacher Conferences  NO SCHOOL

January 20 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day  NO SCHOOL

Christmas Program

The 1st-8th grade Christmas program is Thursday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. Students should meet their teacher in their classroom by 6:15. Students should wear their Christmas best, no jeans. There will be a fundraiser dinner served beforehand at 5:00 p.m.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on January 16th and 17th. This is an opportunity to connect and share your goals for your student in first grade. Please sign up for a time at the following link: First Grade Parent Teacher Conference Sign Ups

Friday 12/20 Events

On Friday, December 20th, Hope will celebrate Christmas with an all-school Christmas sing along. First grade will have our class Christmas party following the sing along. We are not doing a class gift exchange. After the Christmas party we will pack up for early dismissal. Early dismissal for first grade begins at 11:30 am. Extended care will not be available on December 20th.

Open House

Hope will host an Open House on Saturday, January 11th from 9 am to 12 pm.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Hope will not have school on January 20th in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
