Report Cards – Look for your student’s report card coming home in the Thursday envelopes this week. Report cards will be in a separate white envelope. Please sign and return the empty envelope to confirm that you have received the report card.
Trunk or Treat – Come join us for Trunk or Treat in Hope’s parking lot tomorrow, October 24, from 5:30 – 7:00. Many different groups from Hope are hosting trunks. Come to enjoy the fun!
Reformation Stained Glass – Our class has been working on an art project that names the “three solas” identified with the Reformation by Martin Luther. They are sola scriptura, sola gratia, and sola fide, that is, scripture alone, by grace alone, through faith alone. Some of their work will be displayed in the narthex this Sunday as we celebrate Reformation at Hope this weekend.
The weather is changing! Although we have some warm, sunny days mixed in, the overall temperatures are dropping this time of year. Please be sure that your child has a warm coat for recess.
Outdoor Recess Policy
On most days, students will be expected to go outside for recess. If the following conditions exist, the students will not be taken out except to get a few minutes of fresh air.
- The temperature is 15 degrees F. (-13 C) or below. The wind chill index is 0 (-18 °C) or below. There is significant falling moisture.
- Teachers may take their classes out briefly for fresh air at their discretion.
Book Reports – Over the last several weeks, we have been working on summarizing stories by identifying the main characters, setting, sequence of events, the problem, and the solution within the story. Our Language books provided a simple “book report” form to fill in to practice this skill. Last week, I let the students choose any book they liked for this assignment (excluding graphic novels), but warned them not to select one that was too long to read within a week. These book reports are due next Wednesday, October 29. Next month, we will start our first book report projects. They will not be due until December. More information will be coming home in the next several weeks, but I encouraged the kids to begin looking for the book that they would like to use for their report. This book should be in the genre of fiction.
Book-It – We already have the assignment to read daily, so why not participate in the Pizza Hut Book-It Program? Please use the calendars that were sent home at the beginning of the month to keep track of the minutes read each day. Remember that our goal is to read for at least 20 minutes, 6 out of 7 days each week. (That’s equal to 540 minutes for October.) At the end of the month, all those who have met our reading goal and filled out the Book-It reading calendar will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
Choir Sings– The 3rd-5th grade choir will sing during the late service at Hope on November 2. Students should meet Mrs. Schkade in the Luther Room by 10:15 to warm up. Students will sit in the balcony until their piece is finished, then they will meet their parents in the sanctuary or the narthex. Parents, please email Mrs. Schkade and/or your child’s homeroom teacher if your child has other church or family commitments that prevent them from attending.
Operation Christmas Child – Hope is again collecting Operation Christmas Child boxes this year. We will bring them to chapel on November 12 to pray for the children who will receive them. This is a great opportunity for us to share the Good News of Christ with others! So I am challenging our classroom to fill 21 boxes. If we make or surpass our goal, the class will earn 30 minutes of game/activity time in the classroom. If you have more items than you can fit in a shoebox, but not enough to fill another, (this often happens in my family) send them into our classroom and we will put them all together to fill additional boxes.
Spelling words for next week: contractions
| I’ve | let’s | can’t | aren’t | didn’t |

Memory for October 29
The Eighth Commandment: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.
