Third Grade News, 1/15

January 14, 2026

I look forward to meeting with parents during our Parent/Teacher conferences this afternoon and evening. You will receive first-semester report cards, and it will give us a chance to talk about progress and goals for this semester.

We have had a mild, warm January so far, but it is winter, and things can change quickly in Kansas. Please make sure that your child is ready for any kind of weather. We will go outside for recess whenever possible to get some fresh air. Students are required to wear a coat or jacket when the temperature is below 50. We also go out when the temps drop, and the air is cold! (We will not go outside when the temps. drop into the lower teens or wind chill is in the single digits. I don’t want to be out then either!) We will, however, go out when it is freezing temperatures. Hats, gloves or mittens, and a warm coat are important – even when we are only outside for 15 minutes.

Next week, we will continue our work with biographies through another book study. This time, we will be reading the book Helen Keller. This quarter, our book report will be a biographical timeline. We will use Helen Keller as an example of what to expect for this assignment. The class will choose the person (and book) that they would like to present to the class as soon as we finish Helen Keller.

Student Ushers – The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through Easter. 3rd grade has been asked to help hand out service folders and serve as ushers for the 4:00 Wednesday Lenten Services beginning on February 25th. This is an opportunity for students to be involved in a way they enjoy and to serve the congregation that supports our school in so many ways. Student helpers can stay with me after school, and I will accompany them to the sanctuary and stay with them until after the service. Please use this Sign-Up Genius to indicate which service(s) your child could be available to serve. It is not expected that your child serve every week, but please indicate any/all weeks that it would be possible.  Lenten student usher sign-up
