Happy Kansas Day! It’s our state’s 165th birthday!

Will the groundhog see his shadow Monday morning and predict 6 more weeks of winter weather or an early spring?!?! It feels like winter just arrived!

We will continue our work on biographies in reading next week, but we will also spend time on our Olympic unit. The class is very excited for the Olympics to start! The kids have just drawn their countries and are ready to start learning about them.  The opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, will take place this Friday, February 6.

Book report – Project information and rubric for our biography book reports are in this week’s envelope. For this book report, they will be making a timeline of their person.  Students have access to colored paper in the classroom for this project, if needed. The due date is Thursday, February 26, so that we can present them in the first week of March. I have a number of biographies available in the classroom, but students are not limited to those. Books need to be selected by January 30. I am encouraging them to jot down important dates and events as they read so they have the information for their timelines.

Open House will be available on Thursday, February 19th. Parents are encouraged to come to visit their child’s classroom for next year. Open House is open to anyone interested in attending Hope next year. We look forward to seeing you and new faces, too!

Student Ushers – The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through Easter. 3rd grade has been asked to help hand out service folders and serve as ushers for the 4:00 Wednesday Lenten Services beginning on February 25th. This is an opportunity for students to be involved in a way they enjoy and to serve the congregation that supports our school in so many ways. Student helpers can stay with me after school, and I will accompany them to the sanctuary and stay with them until after the service. Please use this Sign-Up Genius to indicate which service(s) your child could be available to serve. It is not expected that your child serve every week, but please indicate any/all weeks that it would be possible.  Lenten student usher sign-up

Our classroom Valentine’s party will be on Friday, Feb. 13. As you make valentines, please include everyone in the class. Please have your child sign his/her name on the Valentine so that the recipient will know whom to thank. (Here is a list of student names for our class: Jemma, Spencer, Gianni, Grace, Hunter, Vyla, Carston, Mila, Ellie, Addie, Zach, Collin, Haset, Kennedy, Harper, William, Evelyn, Micah, Lawrence, Benji, and Gia.) This year, we will decorate bags at school to collect our Valentine’s, so students will not need to make and/or bring Valentine boxes from home.

Memory for February 4:   The Second Article: Redemption
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
