Third Grade Newsletter, 4/23

April 22, 2026

The excitement is growing! We are anxiously waiting and watching the eggs in our incubator. We are hoping that they will hatch sometime next week!

I want to thank the families of my class for the very thoughtful, generous birthday basket filled with so many of my favorite things!! It was an unexpected, but very much appreciated blessing!

Singing at Hope this Sunday
The 3rd-5th choir will be singing this Sunday, 4/26, at the 10:30am service. Please arrive at 10:15 am and meet in the Luther room. Please wear your Sunday best.
If you are not able to attend, please email Mrs. Schkade (schkade@hopelutheran.org).
Hope Lutheran Church is a great supporter of our school, and this Sunday we give thanks for that support. We would like to see as many students as possible attend church. Thank you.

Celebrating America, 250 Years in the Making
Our students have been working hard on their Celebrate American Fair Projects, and we can’t wait for you to see their creativity and dedication come to life!
Join us for an exciting evening on Thursday, April 30th, as we celebrate the United States of America through student projects, presentations, and delicious food. Each grade level will showcase their assigned USA projects with displays, performances, and interactive experiences.
Here’s what to expect:
5:15 PM – Students should arrive and check in with their teachers in their classrooms.
5:30 PM – The American Float Parade will begin in the Family Life Center, featuring student presentations.
After the parade, families are invited to tour classrooms to view projects and sample food from around the USA.
*Third grade should come dressed in their pioneer outfits.
We look forward to seeing you there for this fun and educational evening!
Attendance is mandatory for all students in grades K-8.

Talent Show
We are having a talent show on May 8th.  If your child wants to perform in the show, remember that their entry forms are due back at school by April 30th.

MAP Testing
We will begin our spring MAP testing next week. Please make sure your student arrives at school on time, has a good breakfast, and gets plenty of sleep while we are testing.

  • Thursday, April 30th at 9:30 – Math
  • Monday, May 4th at 8:45 – Reading
  • Wednesday, May 6th at 8:45 – Language

Fine Arts Night
We are excited about the opportunity to showcase our Arts department.  Our music directors, Mrs. Schkade, Mrs. Heiss, and Miss Beumer, have worked with the students all year on music theory, rhythm, and tone. During the evening, each choir will perform under the direction of Mrs. Schkade and Mrs. Heiss. Our bands and recorders, directed by Miss Beumer, will also perform.  Mrs. Bird’s art class projects will be displayed around the building; families will be invited to an Open House to enjoy the students’ work.
Students will arrive at 5:15 pm and meet their teacher in their classroom. After the music performance, students return to their classrooms; parents pick them up.
The 3rd – 8th grade are to wear WHITE TOP AND BLACK BOTTOMS.  There will be a cookie reception in the commons after the program.
Fine Arts Night is on May 14th. Please sign up to bring the cookies for the cookie reception following the performances.  Drop them off the morning of the 14th so we can get them trayed up for the evening.  Thank you!

Hope Track Meet
This is a big meet that Hope hosts every spring. This year it will be on Saturday, May 9th, at the district stadium at Shawnee Mission South High School. It takes lots of people working together for this event. Even though students can’t compete in track until 4th grade, you can still volunteer to help out. There are many different jobs to fill, so you don’t have to have knowledge about a certain event to be of service. You also do not need to be at the track all day. Even the kids can help by being “runners” to take results from an event up to the people who are keeping the stats! Check out the sign-up genius that was sent out to see where help is needed. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054CAEA82AA3F8C07-63315214-hope#/

With all this activity, we are still working hard to learn as much as we can in the classroom! We have been working with polygons in math, and we are just beginning our work on finding the area and perimeter of shapes. We are continuing with Little House on the Prairie during reading. In science, we will be focusing on weather. We continue to diagram sentences in our language arts time. And of course, we have been learning about pioneers in social studies. During our Bible study time, we have been working in the book of Acts and taking note of the many gifts God gives us each and every day!
