Second Grade News 1/9

January 8, 2025

First of all, thank you all for the wonderful gifts that were brought in! I pray that all of you had restful and relaxing breaks spent with friends and family!

Week at a Glance
In Math, we are starting a new unit on place value to 1,000. In Science, we are wrapping up our unit on the human body. In Social Studies, we are talking about the choices we make with our money. In Reading, we are writing “would you rather” stories about winter to practice our comparison skills. In Religion, we are talking about John the Baptist in preparation for the chapel that we are leading next week.

Quarter 3 Reading Log
During quarter 3 and quarter 4, students will be competing in the Reading Olympics. Next week they will be assigned teams to work with through the remainder of the year. Every minute they read counts as points toward their team. There is no set number of minutes for them to read this quarter, but I still encourage around 100 each week. A reading log will still be sent home every Monday and will be graded for completion upon return. As we go throughout the semester, students will have the opportunity to complete mini book reports or other assignments to earn gold, silver, or bronze medals for their teams. I love the competition and excitement for reading that this brings into the classroom and I am looking forward to doing it with this class!

Field Trip!
Please be on the lookout for the permission slip coming home in today’s Thursday Folder. We are headed to the Coterie Theatre on Friday, January 31st. We are going to see a play based on the book “Just Ask.” It is a great story about how all kids are made unique and at school we will be talking about how God makes us all special in our own ways. I have included the link for the read-a-loud below if you are interested in the story! These permission slips MUST be signed and returned no later than Thursday, January 16th so we can account for all drivers.
