brackish – slightly salty

reed – the straight stalk of a variety of tall grasses

rival – a person who is competing for the same object or goal as another

scatter – to throw loosely about, distribute irregularly

fetch  – to go and bring back

basin – a natural or artificial hollow place, container

gnawed – to bite or chew, to wear away by biting

wound – to make one’s way by an indirect way, bending or curvy course

crevice – a crack forming an opening
