scarcely – barely, hardly

reproach – to find fault with or blame for something

smelt – small silverfish

swoop  – to sweep through the air

clipped – to cut off

snare – to catch, entangle

howl – loud, mournful cry

immediately  – to do right away

chatty – constant talk that is considered more than normal conversation

struggling – to do something with difficulty

The chatty girl was struggling to meet the request to be immediately quiet.
