Required Summer Reading

Summer Reading List 2024-2025

At Hope Lutheran School, we value reading, and reading every day during the summer is important. Students at each grade level (1st – 8th grade) are REQUIRED to read books by August 15, 2024.

GOING INTO  First Grade 

REQUIRED  Reading (write a sentence and draw a picture about what happened in each story):

Pete the Cat Too Cool for School by Kimberly and James Dean 

Drop It, Rocket by Tad Hills 

Write a Sentence and draw a picture about what happened in each of the Required Reading selections.  PLUS read 1 book per week from the recommended list. 

Recommended (choose at least 1 book per week): 

“Clifford” books by Norman Bridwell

“Biscuit” books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

“Little Critter” books by Mercer Mayer

Splat the Cat by Rob Scotton (any in the series)

Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale (any in the series) 

Pete the Cat by Eric Litwin (any in series) 

Bear’s Loose Tooth by Karma Wilson (or any others in the series)

If you Give a… books by Laura Joffe Numeroff

Franklin books (any in series) by Paulette Bourgeois

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss (or any others in the series) 

Danny and the Dinosaur By Syd Hoff 

Curious George (various titles) by H.A. Rey

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastmann

Little Bear by Elsa Minarik

Frog and Toad (any in series) by Arnold Lobel

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Amelia Bedelia (any in series) by Peggy Parish 

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina

The Pigeon Has to Go to School by Mo Willems

“Elephant and Piggie” books by Mo Willems
