An observation from morning drop-off

At Hope Lutheran School, our traditions are more than just routines—they are the foundation of a community built on faith, friendship, and belonging. One of our most cherished traditions is the Buddy Program, where 8th graders and kindergarteners are paired together for special activities. But for one young kindergartener, this bond has become a daily highlight.

One morning, his teacher, Mrs. Ochoa, smiled as he excitedly shared, “I see my buddy every day!” She gently corrected him, “No, dear, we only see our 8th-grade buddies on Fridays.” But I had been watching during morning drop-off for months as their friendship grew.

I explained, “He does see his buddy every day. They arrive at school around the same time, and the first thing they do is find each other—exchanging smiles, a warm hug, and a greeting that brightens both of their mornings. If they don’t see each other right away, they wait, shuffling their feet and watching the parking lot, hoping to spot the familiar car pulling in so they can greet each other before heading inside.”

This is the heart of Hope Lutheran School. Beyond academics, we are shaping lives—instilling the values of faithfulness, kindness, and connection. One day, this kindergartener will grow into an 8th grader, taking a new little hand in his, continuing the tradition of encouragement and care. And long after our students leave Hope, they carry with them the relationships and faith that will guide them for a lifetime.
