Today’s anthem, “In Thee, Lord, Have I Put My Trust,” is taken from Michael Praetorius’ nine volume series called Musae Sioniae. Verses 1 and 3 are from Volume 8 which is a collection of hymn settings in four parts–just like most of the hymns in our hymnal. Some of the musical settings were written by Praetorius himself, others collected from various hymnals in the region where he lived. These two verses came from a hymnal in Meißen, Germany. The musical setting of verse 2 is from Musae Sioniae Volume 9 which contains hymns set to two and three voices. Here the voices don’t sing the text together, but each voice is like a separate melody based on the melody of the hymn tune. Thus we get a delightful play between the voices. It has a very dance-like quality. The text is a translation by Catherine Winkworth of a hymn by Adam Reusner. Reusner studied theology in Wittenberg under Luther, Melanchthon, and Jonas. Winkworth translated hundreds of German Lutheran hymn texts into English, many of which are still used today in our hymnal.
